Look at what you are wearing right now; jeans and a t-shirt most likely? Clothing, style and the materials, which make it, change frequently. People would judge others based on clothing in the Anglo-Saxon time, just as people do today. Depending on where you live, the materials you have and your culture, decides the clothing you wear and the occasion which you are wearing them for. It was a tradition for Anglo-Saxons to wear trousers, belts and leather shoes. What would you do if an Anglo-Saxon showed up in your home town and made fun of your clothing? This just shows how much clothing has transformed over the years.
The Anglo-Saxons arrived in Britain, where people lived in small villages. They loved to fight and they were always hunting and farming. On account of their hunting and farming, they had to dress for the occasion. On an average day today, people wear jeans and a t-shirt. The Anglo-Saxons on the other hand, wore trousers and a tunic all made of linen and wool. They would always wear a belt that would be around their waist with a knife and a pouch for them to put their weapons in: for example, to hunt and kill an animal for dinner. Leather shoes laced together were also very common.
Wool, linen and silk were the most used fabrics during this time. Wool was used most often for the lower-class and slaves because it was cheap and it worked. Women would spin the wool from sheep and goats to make their thread to create the clothing. This shows how the society could fend for their selves at this time: today, no one makes their own clothing. Linen was made from a plant and it was used by the middle-class and the ones who were better off. Linen was used for pieces of clothing that were worn close to the skin. Silk is the third fabric and the most expensive also. The upper-class rich people used silk for decoration of their clothing and around their home. It was very expensive so you were lucky if you had what it took to afford it.
Some people may ask, what does the Anglo-Saxons clothing tell us about them? Their clothing can tell us many things about their society. The clothing that the Anglo-Saxons wore tells us that they were very independent and that they are very strong, fierce people. The fighting, hunting and farming also shows us the toughness of them. Their dress shows us that they were presentable and properly dressed, unlike some people in today’s time. Also, based on the fabric that they wore, you would know their social status because people knew how much wool, linen and silk would cost a person.
It is very common to look at someone and judge them by their clothing choice. By what someone is wearing, you can guess their social status. For example, if you see a man walking down the street today wearing a suit, tie and carrying a brief case, you might guess that he is a business man that is well off. My statements above have shown how there has been evaluation on people since clothing was first invented. Though we might not know in depth details about the Anglo-Saxons society and what it was like, we have a good speculation.
