Types of Friends
Have you ever taken the time and thought about what a friend really is? A friend is someone who always has your back and wants to hang out with you outside of school or work. A friend is someone you can tell all of your secrets to and share common interests with. I used to think that just because you hang out with someone, they’re your friend. They might be your friend but what categories of friends surround you?
One of the most common categories of friends is out and about friends. Out and about friends are the people that are your “friend” because you see each other when you are out at places like the gym or the bank when you are running errands. The out and about friend is someone who does not know any of your other “friends”. This relationship would be private because of the fact that you do not rely on this relationship but they will be there for you to tell things to. You might tell your out and about friend that you got offered this amazing job offer but you do not tell them that you don’t want to take it because it would mean you have to move away from your family and work fifty hours each week. Even though this friend is not going to discuss your new job offer with anyone else because they are uninvolved in your life, you have gained confidence knowing that someone else knows you got the proposal.
The convenient friend wants to talk about their life problems but does not really want to hear about yours. Convenient friends seem to talk about themselves but don’t want anything to do with you unless they are in need of something and you’re helping them get it. Convenient friends also do not get too close or tell each other too much, not knowing who will find out. There is no significance to these types of relationships but everyone seems to love having one they can talk to.
Even more importantly is the ancient friend. The ancient friend is the person who has been by your side since you were in kindergarten and playing Barbie’s. They know what you looked like before you hit puberty and got braces. They know what you looked like before you colored and straightened your hair. This person has been with you through your ups and downs. They were by your side when you played together on the playground and picked each other up when you fell off the monkey bars. They are the friends that knew you before you were cool. These are the friends that are always honest no matter how hard the truth might hurt you. The ancient friend knows you more than you think they do. Even though you might not see each other every day like you did when you were younger, you visit them as often as you can and cherish that time spent together. “Though we drifted apart in distance I still think of you as being right here. And although we have many new friends, it is our friendship that means the most to me”, anonymous. This quote is a perfect example of a friend still being your best friend even though you might not see them as much as you would like to. None of your other convenient or out and about friends have these memories that you and your ancient friends shared.
Friendships, no matter what kind, are put into categories. Friendships are put into categories by of the amount of closeness you feel with a person. What you can tell one friend, you might not feel comfortable telling another. A friend doesn't have to be your friend 24/7, that’s why there are so many different types. We accept our different friends just so we can have the fulfillment of having those people around. We come together, simply, to share our lives and presence with our friends.
