Back when my grandparents were growing up they had remedies that helped them get better. Today a person can use a pill for anything and everything. We are a drug dependent society and with all the people becoming addicted, it is important to be educated on drugs. Whether you are taking prescription medicine, cocaine, marijuana or tobacco, you can become addicted.
Drug dependence is very common in this time of day. Pain pills are one of the most commonly used because people can get hooked on them in no time, which leads to drug abuse. The people that are targeted for drug abuse or dependence are those who become depressed, have easy access to drugs and have low self-esteem, a lot of stress in their life or if someone lives in an environment where drugs are accepted and not looked down upon. Some of the symptoms of drug abuse are when a person continues to use drugs when it is harming everyone/everything around them, when they have spurs of violence, when they are confronted they become aggressive, when they make up excuses just to take the drugs, when they have a decrease in their everyday life activities, when they stop caring about how they look and using drugs not only when they are around others but when they are alone.
Drugs are harmful to yourself and the people you are around. When you get “hooked” to drugs, you will begin to use them persistently. This is because the drug you are using affects your brain and it is like a reward when you take the drugs. You will feel a sense of pleasure and importance when you use the drug which causes you to be addicted. Depending on your body, this so called “high” can last for a long period of time. This dependence is harmful because when a person gets so used to doing the drug whenever they “need” it, they are giving up time with their family and friends which can make a person become depressed. Drug dependence can hurt the user and their family. This can hurt a family because the user might feel like they don’t fit in or doesn’t have anyone that understands what they are going through. Without a family member or anyone to help a user along, it is going to be hardly impossible to quit drugs if no one cares. It can be a very positive learning experience for the user and their family if they stick together through the crisis.
Long term effects can be brought into play from a drug abuse problem. Anything from lung, mouth, and throat cancers can come from smoking or dipping tobacco. Some drugs even affect certain parts of your nervous system, which can lead to psychotic changes in behavior. Also, stimulant drugs make people have a greater risk for heart attacks and long term effects can cause a mistake during a pregnancy. Drugs don’t just “mess you up” for the length of the high; they can lead to serious health issues. Aside from health issues, the community a user lives in and rumors from the grapevine can make societies see users badly. After the word gets out that you are on drugs or that you still have drugs in your system, it is hardly impossible to find a job. Corporations do drug tests when they hire new employees, which helps exclude the people who are on drugs. While on drugs, your moods and behaviors will change. Drugs make a person change and it can make a person very violent also. No one wants to be around a person that makes them fear for their life every time you feel like you need to get a “high”. Before you decide to start using drugs, you need to ask yourself if losing your friends and family is really worth that 30 minutes of pleasure you are going to get from something that is going to change your whole world.
Unfortunately, people are going to do drugs, smoke cigarettes and overuse pain pills and harm themselves every day. Being the drug dependent society we are, we need everyone to try to convince users to stop using unnecessary drugs. Being addicted to a drug effects more people than the user. Getting help takes time, patience and courage but it is worth it.
